Each unit is manually soldered and assembled, tuned for best performance output voltage.
Units offer the automatic advance formally known as “SYNCRO SPARK” feature to prevent “Kick Back”
Start Flip rate is around 400-600 range RPM, Flip MUST be firm grab of the prop.
A slower flip than 400 rate RPM will possible give the “Kick Back”, always use a GLOVE or stick.

Here we have a ZDZ 420 B4-j  420cc/35HP  Engine that was converted to run on a CH CDI 4 Cylinders.

The Procedure is the same for 2 CYL Uneven Fire, 3,4,5,7,9 Cylinders CDI.

4 CYLINDER CDI will HAVE only 2 magnets and will fire in banks of  2.

  • # 1 & 2 will fire together
  • # 3 & 4 will fire together

Set the timing for first bank on the Back 2 cylinders  to be Green LED and use #1 & 2 leads from the CDI and for the front will be the RED LED and # 3 & 4 leads from the CDI

 

THE LED was added to help timing and troubleshooting, IT IS NOT A POWER INDICATOR.RED and Green will go ON and OFF blinking.
The timing should be set at 30BTDC when magnet and sensor come first in contact.
Cylinder #1 is the first green LED that comes after the RED. When  Green comes on, that is when you should lock the sensor in place.
Once your timing is set then rotate the prop drive around and check sensor activity . You should get
“X” numbers of GREEN indications , where “X” equal the number of cylinders of your engine.

  • EX:  4 Cylinder engine have 4 magnets South and 1 North. Therefore you should get 4 Green LED indications in a row followed by 1 red.
  • EX: 5 Cylinder engine have 5 magnets South and 1 North. Therefore you should get 5 Green LED indications in a row followed by 1 red.

If  a RED FLASH is in between the 4,5,7,9 GREENS that should be in a row; then you should increase the space between the magnet and sensor. If RED comes in between the Greens this will tell the microprocessor: ” Hey I made a full revolution next Green you see fire #1″ and you will experience backfires poor running.
The Spark Plug leads are numbered on the leads with numbered tiles or printed on the BOX.

The correct way to install the leads is to install them by numbers . CDI # X = the Cylinder # X on the engine. DO NOT install them by the engine FIRE ORDER.
Usual for Radial Engines Cylinder #1 is on top facing the engine from the Prop side and in the prop rotation usual CCW  is 2,3…ETC.

NOTE: CDI made By RCEXL do not have the LED Indicator, this is only on CH CDI Made in USA feature.

To accomplish the same thing you will need to have the the Universal timing device to set timing.

To test the CDI for spark….NEVER EVER pull the cap from the engine when running this will make the CDI to go bad.  The Spark my not arc from the inside and jump to the ground on the metal side.
It may find a easier path …like the water…and spark inside the spark plug booth or inside the box.

Once the spark jumps inside the cap or inside the box it “burns trough”; leaves a carbon trace and if you keep doing it…this will get more thicker and bigger and under the normal engine running conditions under the pressure when the spark must jump the gap of the spark plug is going to say…”hack with this hard work, I have a easier way to spark” and it goes to the less resistive path and you will start experience poor running, misfire .
ALWAYS have a plug in to the cap when checking for spark.

If you do not get and LED activity on the CH CDI and you have NO spark to as follow:

  1. pull cylinder #1 plug and install it in to the cap
  2. leave the other installed on the engine. ( Warning: CLEAR THE ENGINE as you may get a spark and prop may move)
  3. connect the CH CDI Directly to a 6 to 7.4V GOOD battery
  4. disconnect the sensor plug from the CDI and let it hung on the motor.
  5. get the  CDI sensor connection 4 pin plug put a jumper between BLACK and WHITE , release/break connection and you should get a spark on that #1 lead. If you get the spark and you touch release again the Black and White wire then #2 will spark and so on. That is if you want to check all cylinders for spark. You have to pull all out, inset spark plugs on them. if you miss one and did not see it….keep touch and release until you get to that cylinder again.  ON CH CDI the Green LED will blink every time . Same method you will do for the RCEXL CDI. If you have a spark then your CDI is good, the sensor may be your problem. Could be bad or out of magnet field reach.

In order for CDI to function properly both magnets  should be seen by the CDI. If one is missing the CDI will not work .
